Artist's Comments

Just a bit of practice with lighting, trying to get my edges smooth and colouring.

~Narcostock is the reference model I've used from the recently uploaded [link] Many thanks!
Note: This is NOT a photomanipulation. I use photographs for references but nothing more.

I don't like how the edges turned out blurry rather than crisp, but that's something I'll have to work on. Yes, those are lens flares because I'm CHEAP!
I did attempt a little bit of skin texturing, but it turned out patchy due to the lighting and darkness of the overall image.
I really should have spent more time with this, but I've realised I'm a very impatient artist. That's another thing I'll need to work on if I'm to improve. I must learn to take my time. You can see how roughly I did the hands, hair and some of the edges due to impatience.

Critiques

Looks great! You've done a really, really good job with the lighting! And the anatomy is awesome, as always. And I would say that's a responsible use of a lens flare. xD

For critique; I'd say the only thing that might possibly be wrong is the face being pink. Remember that what you see is only light bouncing in to your eyes; so if the only light is the green light coming from the goblet, the only light that bounces will be green, thus making the entire character also green. Now, if there was a secondary, white, light source on top, it would work; but if so you should probably put a little indication of it in the background. Just some subtle light clouds or something like that.

As for skin texture; what I've generally found to work best, is you shade it as normal making it pretty smooth with just subtle hints of brush strokes (Like barely visible, just a little variation so it's not baby smooth); then make a new layer, set it to overlay, and use a scatter brush to paint some light and dark speckles (You can just set your brush to scatter, but I've found that custom brushes tend to look nicer). But be sure to do them small and subtle; it's very easy to overdo texture, and having too much will make the skin look really, really rough.

All in all, though, excellent work! Can't wait to see your next piece! 8D

First you're a procrastinator, then you're impatient, damnit Devin, what else are you? Well, it still looks good, despite your art-deficient psyche.

LENS FLARES FTW

Anyways. It's a nice image. I think the blurry edges work well with the feel of the image. To me, it's softer, more mystic. Usually when I think mystical, I think hazy, blurry, un-real looking.

I like it. Especially because of the AWESOME lens flares.

I like to think that normality doesn't exist. It's simply a more acceptable form of 'wierd'."

Yes, I thought of you when I went a-lens flaring.

cool! Um the reason I asked was cause your edges are probably soft because you use the soft brush right? I just though you'd like to know that the best way to make it more crisp is to use the hard brush.
Do you know what i mean? I'm bad at explaining things xD

Yes, thank you! I understand, but the problem is I am using the hard brushes! I've always got it set to 100% hardness, so it must be something else I'm doing. I'll be sure to double check though. Thanks for the tip!

Love the lighting effect. Particularly the eyes, the eyes are great :)
